Numbers, characters and symbols forming input into an information system, which is typically processed, stored or shared by computers. Data can communicated but it has no meaning, unlike information.

The primary aim of a network is to exchange data in the most efficient manner that connections will allow. It is very easy to lose data and information, through human error, hardware failure or corruption, transmission errors, bugs, malicious code and other attacks.

Scientific experimentation often use data collection for further analysis.
