Acronym: Internet Service Provider
A connection service to the Internet either via modem or other means. Many college students have their university as their ISP while many universities and other ISPs are on an internet backbone that allows them a large amount of bandwidth for a large number of customers.
ISPs can easily analyze packets so a good ISP should have a strong privacy policy and should not give out information about its customers. Some popular, and mature, examples are;
- Earthlink
- NetZero
- Microsoft Network
- AOL – America Online – Part of AOL/Time Warner and member of the RIAA
