*nix

AKA: UNIX-like

*NIX is frequently used to describe UNIX and variants (including BSD variants). Often it is used solely to combine Linux and BSD flavours together. Much like the tendancy to refer to Windows 95, 98, and ME as “Windows 9x”. It is not clear whether this is an official term or just vernacular.

This name is used separate from the word UNIX as it is trademarked by The Open Group who holds ownership of the word “UNIX” and has filed suit to protect it.

“Unices” is also used to describe Unix-like systems (plural).

Syntax

Due to this wiki’s former inability to use the asterisk (*) in a wiki item, we nix is often written as [[nix|*nix]] (displayed as *nix) and not the more obvious *nix.
