WIPO is dedicated to protecting the right to profit from intellectual property rights, much like the RIAA but not just dealing with recorded music in one country. One of WIPO’s activities is arbitration (http://arbiter.wipo.int/domains/index.html) of domain name trademark disputes. WIPO is an agency of the United Nations which, according to its webpage, is

dedicated to promoting the use and protection of works of the human spirit. These works intellectual property are expanding the bounds of science and technology and enriching the world of the arts. Through its work, WIPO plays an important role in enhancing the quality and enjoyment of life, as well as creating real wealth for nations.

In December 1996 at a Geneva convention the organisation adopted two agreements.

  • WIPO Copyright Treaty
  • WIPO Performances and Phonograms Treaty
