Acronym: Advanced Encryption Standard

  1. A contest for a new standard in symetric encryption algorithm to replace DES
  2. The resulting powerful encryption algorithm

More:
  1. The contest that determined Rijndael to be the best standard algorithm created by the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) to replace the weak Data Encryption Standard (DES) algorithm. Many were entered and the finals narrowed down to: MARS, RC6, Rijndael, Serpent, and Twofish, some of which are still relevant in the security field. All finalists were open-source.
  2. A powerful and fast industry-standard encryption algorithm to replace the aging and weak DES. Before its renaming, it was known as Rijndael.

AES uses a 128 bit block size and 128 (AES-128), 192 (AES-192) or 256 (AES-256) bit key.
