Bitlbee is an IRC to IM gateway daemon. In plain English, this means that one can log in from his/her favorite IRC client to (currenly) Jabber, Oscar (ICQ/AIM), Yahoo and MSN. Eventually, one can both log in and run Bitlbee remotely using the IRC client on second location. If run remotely, SSL is advised for encryption between the IRC client and Bitlbee.
Public servers are available on the web site. Bitlbee supports most features of the protocols and official IM clients; for specific info see the web site.
Parts of the code is based on GAIM. It is multi-platform and even got ported to Amiga and Windows. Screenshots are available on the site, configuration in straightforward.
