Carnivore

A system of internet traffic analysis software enforced by ISPs and selected intelligence agencies for security purposes.

Carnivore is reported to monitor email and other potentially dangerous communications, searching for watch-words like “bomb” or “Muslim” at an incredible rate, reporting potentially dangerous e-mails and people for further review, classification, rating, etc.

Carnivore raises enormous privacy concerns and therefore significantly dangerous.

Smarter, presumably better successors to Carnivore now exist but they are all usually refered to as nothing more than Carnivore 2 or 3. While Carnivore was developed by the US, Carnivore-like systems exist throughout the world.

It was recently announced the Carnivore system is retired.
