Character Set

See also: ANSI | ASCII | Unicode | Textmode

A character set is a group of symbolic characters – usually letters, numbers and punctuation symbols. Character sets differ from fonts in that character sets map a code number to a character rather than a character to an on-screen glyph.

For example, in the ASCII character set, the ‘A’ character is 65 and the ‘a’ character is 97. An extended character set which has an extra bit, usually contains the ANSI characters. This set is used for HTML.

Standard character sets like Unicode, allow text and data to be exchanged between different programs, operating systems and architectures.
