A free Internet teleconferencing and whiteboard software developed by Netscape and available for Win32, Mac OS 9, and some UNIX systems. Created between ’97 and ’99, it has not been updated for newer operating systems but remains an excellent and simple collaboration tool that uses very low system resources and can be used on older computers. Originally offered with Netscape Navigator 3.0.
One of the first direct-connect instant messaging services, a more private solution than centralized chat systems like AIM and Yahoo Messenger.
The CoolTalk software lost prominance as Netscape began to market a partner company’s commercial Internet Telephone service Net2Phone (http://www.net2phone), citing the benefit of being able to interface with physical phones and not just computer-to-computer.
