The core of Mac OS X and a BSD Distribution. The Darwin kernel is based on FreeBSD and Mach 3.0 technologies and provides protected memory and pre-emptive multi-tasking. Darwin runs on PowerPC-based Macintosh computers and a version is also available for x86-compatible computers.

Although initially Darwin’s Apple Public Source License got a bad review from one of the Open Source community’s biggest advocates, Eric S. Raymond, it then became Free-Software compliant and then subsequently denied again as of August, 2003.

Darwin is a descendant of the NeXT Operating System.
