Acronym: DDOS
A type of attack in which a concerted effort over hundreds or thousands of computers meant to overwhelm the target thereby interupting the flow of data is coordinated.
A bot network is the term used to describe a collection of compromised computers, usually on broadband, that can be used to attack with a DDOS.
This attack makes the target unable to transmit any messages and effectively useless. A distributed DOS attack appears to be one of the least defensible attacks, as it can cripple even major websites as long as enough resources can be turned against the target.
