An encoder is software that is able to convert something plain into code, eg. text, compressed audio like MP3 and many other communications method. Information like photographs which are made into binary or digital code are encoded. Another example is a compact disc or DVD rip. The internet is flush with encoded files like BinHex for the Macintosh and FTP as well as YEnc and Uuencode for Usenet newsgroups.
