Extract

When something is extracted it is removed with a sustained effort or some force. A good example of something that is an extract is an excerpt from a book or a rip from a CD. Sometimes governments use intelligence agencies to extract information from various sources for security and economic purposes.

Information Extraction

Information Extraction (IE) attempts to identify semantic structure and other specific types of information from unrestricted text. IE recovers individual facts from documents and can be very useful because of its speed and scalability. Information extraction software identifies and removes relevant information from texts, pulling information from a variety of sources, and aggregates it to create a single view.
