A magnetic disc used as floating data storage. Floppies are useful for the backup or transfer of small amounts of data. IBM engineers introduced the disc and peripheral drives to mainstream computing in 1971. At first the floppy competed against the obsolete cartridges.
Computers which had a floppy device included: PC/x86, Amiga, Mac and many more. There are 2 types: 3″5 and 5″1/4. Write access to them is quite slow relative to current standards and they can only fit a few MB.
