A type of software that is free to try and use, requiring no payment for individual use. Unlike open source software these programs usually do not legally permit alterations to source code to be made.
The term “Freeware” has been misused by the mass media and has become a buzzword often applied to software best labeled with another name. Other terms have come about since the early use of the term freeware. See Ware for a list of some of them. While it is a dangerous line of thinking, one could refine/redefine the idea of “free” to exclude such software as adware or spyware.
Free Software, although similar in name, is a movement and a type of freeware that aims to make software totally free as in free of any kind of restriction on use by developers or users. (See BSD License.)
