^H is a hackishly humorous way of displaying “stumbling” over a word in text. The usage comes from early problems with UNIX textmode settings, where the backspace key would sometimes be incorrectly displayed as a control-H (or ^H) character instead of deleting the previous letter. Some terminal-emulation software corrects for this error, while others prefer pressing delete.
For example:
- “You are a fool^H^H^H^Hgenius”
- “I wish I had come up with it first^H^H^H^H^Hback when it mattered.”
- “We^H^HYou are responsible for this problem.”
