A daemon that serves web pages and other content over HTTP. One of the original open source HTTP daemons was the NCSA httpd. It is from this product that the current market leader – Apache came.
Because almost all web pages are served by Apache and IIS these days, many of the lesser-known daemons have fallen into obscurity. Netscape sold a popular HTTP daemon, and AOL released their Tcl-centric daemon as open source in the mid 1990s.
