To add a peice of software. Often, this software then allows the user to do something with their computer they couldn’t before such as a Word Processor, web browser, or Music or Video players.
Software that does not install itself into the computer deeply is known as “lightweight.” AOL‘s ISP software distributed constantly on millions of CDs is notorious for integrating deeply into one’s computer and never really uninstalling. Mozilla, and many other open source tools, are generally very easy to uninstall because they do not have a commercial adjenda that the community (and other developers helping out with the project) will tolerate.
