Wikipedia: Latency (http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latency)
Refers to the time it takes data to travel across a system like a network. High levels of latency can be the result of a slow processor, heavy use of graphics, etc. also known as “lag.”
Latency can be combated by using higher-performance networking hardware such as upgrading hubs to switches.
