A type of compression that produces the exact same sound, picture, or video as from the source, usually a rip from compact disc or a transfer from a digital camera, it was taken from.

Some lossless codecs such as TTA, FLAC and Monkey Audio can be played in a normal audio player such as Winamp and some like Shorten and multimedia-compressed RAR files must be separately decompressed in order to be listened to.




Availability on the Internet

Lossless audio appears to get more and more common with broadband connections being more wide available. For example, the BitTorrent website http://bt.etree.org or the Usenet group alt.binaries.sounds.lossless.* tree. A Usenet group dedicated to Monkey’s Audio is named alt.binaries.sounds.monkeysaudio.
