Online is an adjective describing something as being connected to a computer network. In almost all situations today, online is used to refer to something that is on the internet.
For example, “online shopping” means purchasing items over the internet. On the other hand, a network administrator might ask “is our Samba server online?”, referring to a server on the internal network.
