Parties have probably occurred since people became social and have their roots in ritual and (perhaps) religion. Many different types of parties exist, but the type that has most relevance to this wiki are those that create temporary autonomous zones.
At LAN Parties, gaming enthusiasts can play games and share files in a safe environment and on a closed network where activities remain unknown to non-participants. At demo parties, computer freaks and hackers can gather and discuss programming methodologies, code and new developments without needing to filter their speech.
Parties differ from conferences in that they are casual and may not have a set order of events – they happen organically.
