A RCS manages multiple revisions of files by automating the storage, retrieval, logging, identification, and merging of revisions. It’s particularly useful for text that is revised frequently, such as programs, documentation, graphics, papers, and form letters. CVS itself is built on top of RCS and uses it extensively for its functionality.
