Real-time relates to the time or status of something that is designed to perform or function for a preset amount of time. Computer hardware and software act in real-time when they collect or distribute data as it is processed, without lag. There are many examples of real-time activity, related to iA, including:
- audio synthesis, equalization, recording, etc
- broadcast telemetry, video and other communications
- credit card processing, ATM and EFTPOS transactions
- Flash Mobs
- Internet Telephony
- program operation, batch processing, metadata generation, multi-tasking, etc
- MIDI
- Router and modems
Wikis, weblogs, email and RSS are developing into real-time applications.
