SMB

See also: Samba | Microsoft | Procotol

Acronym: Server Message Block

A proprietary protocol invented by Microsoft. Succesfully reverse engineered by the Samba development team. It can be used for various purposes related to sharing networking services to the rest of the world. More information about the protocol on the Samba homepage (http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/).

Since Windows has no NFS support, Samba is often used together with Windows SMB implementation in order to have a compatible, heterogenous environment.
