1. A way of separating TCP/IP transmissions to the same IP Address to different programs. A socket is what is created when a port is opened for use. For more information see the port page.

2. In relation to processors, a socket is the physical arrangement of pins used to connect the CPU to the motherboard. Certain CPUs only fit in certain sockets, which is why it’s important to match your motherboard to your processor. For example, “Socket 7” is the type used for Intel‘s Pentium motherboards.
