A lossy audio compression format designed for speech and Internet Telephony. It is Open Source/Free Software (FOSS) and patent–free. The program, now above version 1.0, is beginning to gain momentum but only as a textmode tool and in need of a better front-end and possibly a Winamp plugin. Like Ogg Vorbis and FLAC, Speex comes from the Xiph.Org‘s multimedia project. The main aim of the project, and of Speex, is to provide free and cheap alternative to proprietary and expensive audio counterparts without neglecting quality.
File size using default settings are about 6% of an original mono WAV file with no perceivable quality loss.
