Method of communication that uses low-powered radio waves to transmit data between devices. High powered transmission sources usually require government licenses to broadcast on a specific wavelength. This platform has historically carried voice and has grown into a large industry, carrying many thousands of broadcasts around the world. Today there are a growing number of wireless broadband ISPs and radio waves are increasingly being used by unregulated computer users.

Software and hardware developers are creating smaller computer networks which form ad-hoc wireless networks, with protocols such as WiFi. The IEEE 802.11 standard is for wireless, Ethernet-like LANs. The insecurities in this protocol, especially in earlier versions, have popularized the concept of war driving.

Optimal bandwidth routes within wireless networks requires the calculation in real-time of the best way to direct traffic.

For those concerned with physical security, microwave signals (that cook food) are in the 2.45GHZ range. Cell phones, wireless networking, and other similar tools are in the 2.4 GHZ range. This is why proximity to microwaves can disrupt wireless communication.
